Silly silly silly....!

I just got an email from Australia about possibility of working in Perth.

"We have discussed, that there might be a good chance for your registration to work with us in
Perth. The Medical Board in Perth doesn’t actually take any fees from you unless you get registered, so no loss there unless you are a winner.

As you know we run an after hours home visiting service in Melbourne and Perth. The work involves visiting patients of clinics that subscribe to our service.

The work is not very glamorous, but it pays a lot better than work in a regular GP setting. This is because the government rebates for patients’ services are a lot higher for after hours work. "

Anyway I think details are so sketchy and so uncertain. I have already moved on with my life. Signed for acupuncture course, wife going into teaching bond for 4 years.......

The devil is tempting me. The offer provides a car, housing, and air fare though.

What do you think?

I have attached information on the position available. Please let me know your thoughts.

Your life looks ontrack to good things what with you becoming a half sinseh and your wife a soon to be qualified teacher. One of my daughters in law is also a NIE trained graduate teacher and she is the tutor to all my grandchildren.

In life sometimes the devil works in wondrous ways to tempt you but once you decide to move on in a straight path, nothing should sway you away into the wildernes. Pun intented.

The job description doesn't exactly read like you would be going on a second honeymoon. More like having to make house calls even in the dead of the night and perhaps even to weird places. In Perth, you may perhaps even have to drive three times the length of Singapore to get to your patient. If you relish driving at night with kangaroos and assorted weirdoes crossing the path of your car then go for it! Sometimes if you are lucky, you may even see a woman in all white smiling at you from the beam of your car highlights.

Good luck!!!

From a concerned fan.

"I've never been happier for the past 3 years man! I finally see the light liao! YAHOOOOOO!!!!!"

Which light?

The drive through the dark night or the light of day?

When your application is turned down yet again, we will have to hear more of your sad stories and bear with your self pity. Please spare us the torment and get on with what you are doing now.

Hmmm... though I'm not exactly your "regular fan"... Think you should:

(You Christian?)
Pray for His Divine guidance?
Work out the scenarios with your Wife?.. the opportunities vs Opportunity costs; and also what's your end goal and how to work towards it in the various scenarios?

If you go try out for 1 or 2 yrs for a change in lifestyle and for the experience, and then come back to SG... You kids are still young, right?... minimal impact to them adjusting to the change in education systems. Your wife's bond with MOE and your acupuncture course can always defer until you are back from your stint in Perth?

Qn:
How long is the contract offered?
If you wanna consider the offer, make sure you've got the children's education covered. Don't compromise on that.
If they don't want to tax equalize your income, at least make sure they pay for the kids' education.

Things don't always go your way, coz you gotta trust Him.. In His Time, His Way.

Couldn't agree more with pretzel.

Well first off, there will be a driver who drives me around. I won't have to do any driving myself.

The money is very very good. Each patient pays on average $111. In a 12 hour shift we'll see about 25 patients. Doctors usually work 4 days/nights a week. Depending on the commission paid to the company, the company can provide a car for personal use and accomodation in a service apartment plus airfare for a family of 4. The tax rate is 47%

Of course it's no where the huge sums of money stock brokers can make so easily, but it's still good.

Working 4 days a week? I've never experienced that in my life. So what if the shifts are at night? I had my fair share of slogging 60 hours shifts on the trot. Yes SIXTY HOURS. In a certain posting I worked in hospital we were on 36 hours shifts every other day and on alternate weekends we worked 60 hour shifts (8am Saturday to Monday 8pm).

So frankly, I don't think the hours will be much of a problem. And we only see 25 patients at the most! Chicken feed.

Of course with all things there are pros and cons.

I discussed with my wife and she was quite supportive. We'll see how the application goes. IF (and that's a BIG if) it does go through then we'll see we go about doing it. I might go over and work first. Save up some money and then after 4 years have my wife join me. Maybe my daughter would join me earlier when she starts school.

Anyway it's still too early to make any real plans.

I personally think it's something new and worth trying. For a while I did do some medical evacuation work with International SOS. It was pretty interesting. Flying to places like Oman for instance. Stopping at Queensland and staying for a night at Surfer's paradise. Just a bit of variety to break the monotony of institutional practice.

But with my current job committments these things have taken a back seat.

Maybe different people are different. I kinda like a bit of variety and change every so often. That's just me.

Besides it might be good for me to go over and work for say 3 months and see how I find it. If it's bad, then I just come back to Singapore and work in the Polyclinic.

It sure does sound much better these days.

"Qn:

The minimum length you need to work is 13 weeks. That's not very long to TRY it out don't you think?

"If you wanna consider the offer, make sure you've got the children's education covered. Don't compromise on that."

If I do try it, my kids and wife will be in Singapore still. My kids are not due to start school till about 2 years from now. Actually it's an interesting thought because even with free car and lodging, I'll still be pulling in close to AUD$11K a month (after commisions to the company and after tax also!) Finances wise it will make little difference and in fact be a better move for me.

"If they don't want to tax equalize your income, at least make sure they pay for the kids' education."

If I choose to take the lower commission rate and forgo the free car and lodging and get my own, I'll be drawing about AUD$15K a month (after commission and tax). I think my family will be very comfortable. And all this for me working 4 days/nights a week!

"Things don't always go your way, coz you gotta trust Him.. In His Time, His Way."

That's absolutely true. I've begun to accept that. I realize there is no real point in planning things. I've become more resigned to having God have his way. Who knows what his plans are? Leave it to him. Maybe tomorrow I may start passing bloody stools and find I have colorectal cancer?

As Jesus says, "So I tell you, don't worry about the food you need to live. And don't worry about the clothes you need for your body. Life is more important than food. And the body is more important than clothes. Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or save food in barns. But your heavenly Father feeds those birds. And you know that you are worth much more than the birds. You cannot add any time to your life by worrying about it. "And why do you worry about clothes? Look at the flowers in the field. See how they grow. They don't work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that even Solomon, the great and rich king, was not dressed as beautifully as one of these flowers. God clothes the grass in the field like that. That grass is living today, but tomorrow it is thrown into the fire to be burned. So you know that God will clothe you much more. Don't have so little faith! Don't worry and say, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' All the people that don't know God try to get these things. Don't worry, because your Father in heaven knows that you need these things. The thing you should want most is God's kingdom and doing the good things God wants you to do. Then all these other things you need will be given to you. So don't worry about tomorrow. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Tomorrow will have its own worries.

— Matthew 6:25-34 (ERV)

And so I pray :

"Almighty and sustaining God, I believe tomorrow is in your hands, so I will rest myself in your grace today as I seek to live for you. Please open my eyes to see the opportunities you provide today so that I can serve you and do your Kingdom work with focus, courage, and clarity. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."

Hey I am not a Christian fanatic. But there are many teachings from the bible that are applicable to daily life.

I went to a Catholic school when I was young. Studied Christian studies for Religious Knowledge at O Levels.

And I got baptised a couple of years back.

Look not at the religious side of it, but at the teaching itself.

I think there are many prudent points to liver for today and not worry about tomorrow.

Essentially, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. So live for today!

Ah I remember now. I know this passage from the bible because I read Dale Carnegie's book "Stop worrying and Start Living" when I was 15 years old.

He talked about this in a chapter.

hi good doc, like your fans and friends mentioned, follow your heart, or God's leanings. Sometimes, if your consciousness feels that you are "tempted", then your inner compass or alarm is already warning you. You lead a blessed life unlike many, and surely you can do lots of wonders and bring happiness to many, wherever you are, even here.

Thanks for the kind words Seamus.

My best wishes go out to you!

Whatever happens happens. The best way to live is to live every minute today to the fullest.

How stupid! Birds don't have to pay GST, car loan, housing loan, school fees etc or vote.

Better stop this nonsense otherwise you'll become like a bird too!

Good luck mate! (I still could call you Dr Ozzie oioioi hey?)
I know how you feel to be longed for a change to experience something different in your career zone. There u go!
Thank goodness I'm still single (probably forever) so I can work anywhere I like without much worries ;p ->don't eat sour grapes.

Good thing about working in Oz is getting more annual leave and flexible working hours. Bet that's how people view Ozzies are quite slack people.hurhur!

Yours truly -in- feet.

At 4:17 AM, Blogger Dr Oz bloke said...

Well if I do work in Oz either as a GP in a clinic or doing the after hours service work, I get paid per patient seen.

No work = no pay. No leave allowances.

I guess I'd be more hardworking than most Ozzies. But that also means I'll earn more too.

I'm intending to work hard, not slack. People say that's spoiling the market.

Hey you earn as much as me when I was working 5.5 days and you pay less tax (my tax rate is 48.5%)! How can that be! ;( I don't have leave allowance either, that's what happen when you are getting a commission.

Make sure you think carefully about your kids' education. Public schools here are kinda shitty and private schools cost a bomb. On top of that bullying is very common in both public and private schools due to poor discipline. Teachers are too scared to discipline the kids for fear of being sued, even parents are scared to discipline their kids. This guy in town belted his son coz he was stealing and the social department took his son away from him. Thank goodness I didn't grow up here if not my mum would have received heaps of fine for "child abuse" and I would probably be put in a foster home.

hey dentist down under, then what in the world are you and flatfeet doing in Oz?

God it sounds like the worst place on earth to be man!

At 7:49 PM, Blogger Dentist Down Under said...

Haha no it's the best place on earth to be ;p the best place I've ever lived (and I'd live in different countries in Asia and Europe before we came here). I don't have kids so I don't have to worry about bullies in school, even if I've kids I'll teach them to be tough and if ppl ever bully them they can bash the crap out of the bullies, if not I'll bash up the bullies myself, or maybe they'll end up being the bullies haha. ;p

I've only been working 2 years, and I bought a house (a $420K house not a dodgy one the size of 8 HDB 5 room flat but a fraction of the price :D) and a Land Rover Freelander. Where else on earth can you do that? No where but Oz. :D
