Shocked!

Once in a while, I buy TOTO. I usually buy $1, $2, or 1 system 7 when I want to splurge.

Anyway today was one of those days I queued up to buy TOTO. The group 1 prize is 1.5 million for tomorrow's draw.

While I was in the queue I saw many familiar faces. Patients of my clinic lining up to buy lottery.

One of them was holding a $1000 note. Another was counting his money 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,.......$50 notes. And they were holding stacks of those lottery entry forms. STACKS!

I recognized a few of them who always tell me they got no money so please charge cheaper when they see me.

No money eh?

Ironically there is this new poster at the TOTO outlet that says things like

1) Only gamble what you can afford to lose.

2) Gamble for fun. Don't gamble to invest.

3) Gamble in moderation. You have to eat, drink ,bathe .......

Frankly I didn't see any of the ah peks and ah mahs reading the poster.

Oh well life goes on.....I hope I win the $1.5 mill tomorrow! Wish me luck!

If I win Oz will STILL not accept me lah.

If you want to go to Oz via cash investments, you need AUD$2.6 million.

So forget it lah. Anyway I've really given up on migration lah.

Get on with life, be contented, be happy with the things I have rather than the things I do not have.

Win 1.5million still have to work lah. I have done my sums. Of course it would help a lot but still have to work :)

Doctor,

Betting on ToTo requires a large amount of luck.. I recommend Strike! instead... easier to win. heh.

Basically, ppl are just finding avenues to take advantage of other people... it's the culture here.

Gambling is a negative sum game unless u are the banker.

Try buying government bond, they give close to 3% for 3 month Treasury bills.

I don't recommend long term bonds because interest rates are likely to go higher than now because of property bubble in US.

If u can invest for a long time, then the stock market can provide a better return over a long period of time (6%). In Singapore however, our market tend to mean revert unlike the US market.

STI is also close to all time high. Now is not the time to invest. Then again I can't predict the market but if u believe in buy low sell high, then u would have made money during the SARS period where STI was only 1200.

Read the intellgent investor b4 investing and learn margin of safety.

Moolah man, that's what matters most.

OZ, you've been conned by your patients wholesale man. Next time you see them, prescribe some placebo and charge them designer drug rates. Tell them, take two every 6 hourly and have energy to punt at the toto and four d outlet.

Really, a fool born every minute.

Seems like you've joined the regular fools at the betting outlets.

Hey Gary,

Enough is enough lah. I'm not ignorant as far as investing goes, I've read many books too. And you still sound very much like you were 3 years ago. Asking questions to companies about their challenges, long term performance aside, have you invested anything yourself?

SARS was 3 years ago dude. Any wise man would have taken advantage to get some cheap undervalued stocks.

Anyway, please don't post your unsolicited advice about investing and all. If I wanted such advice I'd be wise to find proven successful people in that area, like Warren Buffet, Peter Lynch, Gupta, and hey Uglybaldie!

Gambling is NOT an investment. It's for fun. Why you think I only bet $1?

Anyway Gary, I like you as a person but not as a lecturer and teacher in life and money. Can we stick to social stuff like anime, movies, sports, medical topics (without reference to economics and money please) etc?

You're much more fun to talk to that way.

So please, can I just request that you don't write about economics and money at my blog comments?

When you said you were Game1980, I realised it was not fruitful to discuss money and economics with you anymore.

I've joined them. Initially I felt quite funny standing in line with them. One auntie said "wah yee sheng still must buy toto ar?"

Then when I saw them with all their stacks of $50 notes.....

I guess it also allows me to "connect" with the average man on the street lah.

I'm a humble, no egos no pride sort of guy anyway.

And no!

I am NOT a complete fool : some parts are missing.

Life is a balance lah. Wait Lady LUCK angry cos she have to smile at me everyday then one day she show black face.... I DIE LIAO!

Anyway I got into the course! Just got the letter. After I pay them and sign all the papers and get the books, official timetable this weekend, then I'll blog about it. Ok?

This course is the first of its kind in Singapore. Never done before!

Sorry just that nobody in my batch I can talk to about money and economy.

Some of them who are born with silver spoons, some of them are idealistic.

Soon they realise the importance of money when they start to work.

Read Warren Buffett latest annual report and see that he is bearish on the market.

Where will I find my Chralie Munger?

Trust me even AFTER they start work they won't know the meaning of money.

Many of my classmates still don't know a thing about money or investments.

Those born with silver spoons get married, buy condos etc with help from parents.

Some spend 80% of their salaries servicing their 100% 10 year loan for that BMW 5 series.

Trust me there are more doctors who are financially ignorant than there are financially intelligent ones.

Heck even accountants are like that. They manage the cashflow for their big companies, but they don't manage their family accounts.

That's life Gary. It's good you know now. Perhaps it's been frustrating cos it's been ?3 years since you realized but you couldn't do much about it.

Well at least you won't make the same mistakes some of your classmates will make. Unfair as it is, some of them can have the luxury of making as many mistakes as they want and it won't change a thing to them.

Soldier on Gary. In the end it's your life, not theirs.

It's fine to talk. But I find that you are looking for real geniuses or Warren Buffet types to talk to regarding finance. Otherwise you won't listen to anybody, but expect people to listen to you. While I do know a bit, have read a bit, have had success in investing etc I am certainly no expert. I can understand why you won't listen to me.

But in the same way, it's no fun communicating when it's only one way right?

I don't know why you are so hanged up on your patients wanting to hear what they want to hear and not what your professional opinion. I always value my doctor's opinion. If I don't like his opinion, I just keep quiet and maybe seek a second opinion. At least, you are a SG doctor, the cream of the crop. Try to count your blessings.

Dear Anon, if patient's did not like what they hear they would seek a 2nd opinion just like you said. And guess what? I would have no patients anymore. No?

Secondly, the chance of having a happy patient is higher if you tell them what they like. The chance of a happy patient suing a doctor (even if the doctor did the WRONG thing) is lower.

Thirdly, the chance of a patient writing complaint letters to the press is HIGHER if the patient hears things they don't like.

So the moral of the story is, doctors should balance between moral ethical duty versus customer satisfaction.

A simple case example :

Patient came in with recent change in bowel habits. Has been having constipation for the past 3 weeks.

I take a history and want to do a per rectal examination and proctoscope for her (this involves sticking a finger and a metal scope into the anus and IS a proper part of the examination in a patient with such presentation). She does not like the idea of it, (just like many other patients male and female).

It's fine with me too (cos I dun like sticking my finger up smelly asses either) except she keeps asking what's the cause, why is she having these symptoms etc.

So I end up explaining to her why I would need to do the examination to get more information to form a diagnosis. Pictures, explanations, address her concerns that she is not the only patient who feels that way about per rectal exams, but it is a proper part of my duty, however she has the right to refuse, on the other hand there are instances where we might miss an early rectal tumour etc etc.

She finally understands, but still does not want the PR exam. At least she stops asking me for a definitive answer cos I can't give one without completing my duties.

So do what patients like matter? Of course. If I forced her to let me stick my finger up her ass, she wouldn't come back again. On the other hand if I didn't explain and 6 months later she found out she had rectal cancer.....she'd blame me.

Now these patients are OK! Cos' they speak English and can be reasoned with. The old ah mahs....well that one....you go figure lah.

I guess I'm a doctor with a conscience. Perhaps slowly I'll learn to lose that conscience and go to sleep at night not bothering whether I have served my patients well but happy that I still have a job and patients to see. Until that day I will have to grapple and balance the 2.
