Make no mistake! I am worth MORE dead than alive!
Some people don't fully understand it when I say that I am worth more dead than alive.
You see that statement is true. The reason why people don't realise that is because they don't know how much I am insured for. If they knew, well......
Of course in that statement I am referring to monetary worth. But during the SARS period, I decided to protect my family. I realized that my profession was actually high risk. Seeing colleagues dying on the job was not something we would have foreseen when we entered medical school. But today it is a reality. The bird flu epidemic looms over the horizon........
I took up several policies to protect my family. That way I can continue to work without fear. As a doctor I need to do my job which is to serve the patients to the best of my ability. But there can be risks.
I realize one thing I cannot stand in Singapore is all this talk about money money money. That seems to be all everyone talks about. Money. If you look at the NKF issue, it's about money. When you look at the Casino issue, again it's about money.
Thus when I start thinking of money, somehow it gets me down. Better to not think about it so much. But living in a society which is obsessed with money, it isn't going to be easy.

I hope you realise that all this motivation towards making more money in Singapore makes us that much more welcomed in countries that want our money.
Think about it.
Also, when you are dead and gone, what use is it to you personally to have racked up all those high paying insurance policies. Things change. People change. At the end of the day, it's only you yourself that matters.
yeah that's what I realized too when I thought of using my insurance cash values to offset my retirement needs.
Not worth it. So in the end the insurance benefits only my kids and wife if I go before them :)
One thing I hate very much is the fact that for about the same price, I get a 99 year lease HDB flat in Singapore, vs a freehold home in Oz.
I've sorted out my plans anyway. Both plans if the Oz plan does work out, and if it does not and I have to stay in SG.
Trying to stay positive. For the matter, I am not suicidal. Hell is not a very tantalising option for me. So most likely it would be an arrythmia, bird flu or SARS or an accident. Totally out of my control. But I would be worth quite a bit, which is a consoling thought.
I agree with uglybaldie's comment. At the end of the day, it is you to decide how do you want to make yourself feel better. We know how patients or certain enviromental influences can bog us down. So it's not worth to brood over it too much.
It's the same for me here. The tax is super high is oz. The more I earn, the more tax I paid obviously. And then I start wondering where has the money gone to. *Sigh* Staying in the most expensive city doesn't help either.
Who says grass is always greener on this side? Well, not necessary it seems.
Yep the grass is not necessarily greener at all. But the grass is different.
While the tax appears to be super high in Oz and super low in SG, that comment may not totally be correct either.
You have to do your sums eg cost of living, price of cars, price of homes, health care benefits or lack thereof, pension plans etc.
Strangely I've done my sums and I will earn MORE in Oz than in SG AFTER TAX.
I still wouldn't say Oz is greener than SG. But it is different. And that's a refreshing change for me.
You should be aware that Aussie tax on income is global. That is, all income derived globally is subjected to their tax regime.
The best is to earn money in Singapore and enjoy their open space and way of life on a 90 day visa. In that case, what is the use of becomming their citizen. A PR staus would just do nicely.
Actually, I don't really understand why you are so darned keen to get out of our sunny island. What have we done to you or what have we not done what you are hankering for.
Let me assure you that save for their open space and a little bluer sky, there is really really nothing much down under. In fact, if you stay long enough, you'll be dying to come home. At least, here, for me, we are the majority. Get what I mean?
Well said Ugly baldie. After staying in oz for 6 years, I'll definitely wanna come home for awhile at least. I took up the PR because it was easy for me under skill migration. It's rather irony to think that the longer I stayed here, the more i miss my friends, food (trust me, they ARE different here), family more than ever.Another reason I've chosen to stay awhile longer is for overseas work experiences. To me, the healthcare system seems either to favour the ang moh specialists or exploit the fresh grads from overseas.Perhaps that's the only thing which I don't like about SG healthcare. It's good to see that you are giving Oz a go and see how it goes. Sooner or later, you may learn to appreciate eg, the cleanliness of SG, the transport system, the efficiency which Oz always lack in. For instance,(' I heard') there are patients in the public hosp waiting more than 6 months just to get a hip replacement done. So what can the patients do nothing except popping NSAIDS pills to kill the pain in the meantime.Even waiting to be served at Mackers is pretty much over the time limit.Tsk tsk*
Anyhow, these are just some of my personal experiences to share with you.
Heh, that reminds me of my dentist who is also interested in moving to oz and oh, my GP too! Hmmmm......
Well flatfeet, it looks like you really shouldn't be staying in Oz anymore.
Come back soon.
But I agree I might feel the same way after I go to Oz. But that's the thing, at least then I know what's so good about Singapore and it would make me treasure Singapore more.
It's about exploring our "space", learning and developing.
You have made the trip and learned more about yourself and what you desire and treasure, which is good for personal development no? Even uglybaldie has also made the trip.
Let me make my own discovery too. Let me grow and let me experience.
I have also met people who have gone to Oz and loved it and decided to stay there for the long term.
Which is why I say to each his own.
High tax rates? Whoever said anything about renouncing Singapore citizenship? I'm not that dumb you know :)
More options are always better than less.
