WHO will not hire smokers

Heard on the radio this morning that WHO has announced they will not hire people who smoke.

There was a talkback session where callers made their views known.

Sounds familiar doesn't it? If I recall we had a discussion on angry dr's blog about how doctors should practise what they preach.

Looks like WHO is taking a step in leadership here.

I dare say that we should only hire doctors who are not smokers, not drinkers, not obese, and not sexually promiscuous and only practise safe sex.

Unfortunately there are doctors who are smokers, drinkers, obese and sexually promiscuous. I wonder how patients would feel if they saw one of these doctors who tried to "educate" them about quiting smoking and drinking, losing weight and practisign safe sex.

Way to go WHO!

I knew a doctor once who chain smoked.
He died at the ripe old age of 45 from, you guessed it, lung cancer.

Drinking in moderation is not bad. In fact, it's supposedly good for your heart.

Being slightly off BMI is ok if one has good total cholestrol/HDL readings, ratio and LDL is low. How to do that? Drink lots of tea, get your gallbladder out and read Dr. OZ bloke's expunged blog entry on "Fats".

Being sexually promiscuous is ok if you know how to engage in safe sex. Any doctor who graduated with decent results know how to do it. The risks are the same as crossing the road so don't fret about it.

Only stupid doctors inhale the obnoxious fumes into their chest. I suspect such individuals to have a death wish but who just want to do it slowly. You can be damn sure they bought lots of insurance though.

One has to realize that beneath their apparently "respectable" demeanour and image, doctors are after all human. The WHO is right to ban the employment of doctors who smoke. It is not only stupid, it affects those around you too.

Wah uglybaldie,

You better put disclaimer in your comments. You sound like a doctor!

"Being slightly off BMI is ok if one has good total cholestrol/HDL readings, ratio and LDL is low."

Where did you read or hear that from? Terribly wrong and bad!

50% of all heart attack patients have good total cholestrol/HDL readings, ratio and LDL is low. That was what the American Heart Association found.

yEAH, i LEFT out saying that your BP should be better than 120/80 with a pulse rate at rest of 60 and you have a serene lifestyle with zero stress and does yoga and meditation exercise regularly. Forget about what the AHA or any association for that matter say. What is statistics? Nothing except hearsay and speculation. You will go when the time comes but in the meantime, you do everything possible within your means to follow what the idiots recommend. Hell, they can't even agree amongst themselves!

Omission is no commission and no need for disclaimer because I am ranting as a layman and not speaking as a practitioner of medicine.

I can even say char kway teow is good for health and no one, would be foolish enough to sue me. If they have too much money, I suggest that they start donating to the new and revamped and cleaned NKF under Mr. G
"wanton mee extra large" E.

LMAO
